In every cell, there is a nucleus where genetic material is kept in genes. Genes are important and carry all of our inherited traits and grouped in groups called chromosomes. Usually, each nucleus has 23 pairs of chromosomes, half from one parent and the other parent. Down Syndrome is when someone has an "extra" of chromosome 21.
The extra genetic material changes development and causes characteristics of Down Syndrome. Some common physical traits of Down Syndrome are low muscle tone, small stature (short), and upward slant to eyes. People with Down Syndrome are all different and unique with there appearance, some may have more characteristics of Down Syndrome than others.
Down Syndrome is said to be the most common genetic chromosomal disorder.
